Campustown Faves to Explore Before Students Return
The countdown is on, and in less than two weeks, the students will be back on campus! Make the most of this small window and check out some of our favorite places to go for pour-over coffee, Illini gear, authentic Chinese cuisine, and more.
where to sip
Settle in to Brewlab Coffee, a super-cozy café known for its artisanal espresso and beautifully crafted pour overs, a thoughtful lineup of teas, and perfectly baked, flaky pastries (omg the croissants!). The vibe’s just right if you crave a comfy corner, juicy conversation with a friend, or easing into some quiet laptop time.
Caffe Paradiso is artisan coffee experience with true college-town character. Order a world-class cappuccino (I have it on good authority that it really, truly is) and chill among the plants, vintage furniture, creativity, and welcoming vibe.

Check out why New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells lauded our Chinese food scene by going to Northern Cuisine. You may not be up for his favorite dish—the wok-fried crispy pork intestines with dried chiles—but trust that this is seriously delicious food.
Known for ultra-fresh sushi and beautifully plated Japanese dishes, Sakanaya works for every mood: a quick solo sashimi lunch, a cozy ramen date, or a “treat yourself” sushi spread. Pop in midday for a roll or two, then come back another time for chicken katsu or a hearty udon bowl.
For a more traditional pub atmosphere, Murphy’s is a true Illini institution. Expect an abundance of orange and blue, juicy burgers, and their famous Irish nachos. With fewer students around, and the first game day a few weeks away, you can actually snag a seat and take your time.

Stock up on orange and blue before campus gets busy again. Gameday Spirit is always a go-to for Fighting Illini gear, and here’s a little tip for Illini fans: late summer is a great time to visit the Illini Union Bookstore, too. Browse shirts, hats, gifts, and game day essentials.
Fern & Flora is part flower shop, part plant boutique, and part “I want everything in here.” Many of the fresh bouquets feature flowers grown at the nearby Iron Meadows Flower Farm so your arrangement feels extra special. Beyond the blooms, you’ll find easy-care houseplants for the plant-curious; botanical candles, skincare, and little luxuries; puzzles, plushies, and books that make excellent gifts.
Where to Stroll
Japan House offers a meaningful introduction to Japanese aesthetics and traditional arts, with a sense of calm that carries into the surrounding gardens. Take a walk through the grounds, and you’ll find one of the area’s most serene places to slow down, reflect, and simply be present.
One of the university's first research plots, Illini Grove helped launch early U.S. forestry course in 1871. It was designated as a picnic area in 1951, and continues to be a beloved gathering spot today.
Of course, you can always take a walk around the Main Quad. Now's the time, while the sidewalks are clear and you can avoid dodging hordes of students heading for class.
