University of Illinois

Wave Your Orange & Blue!

Hosting 51,000 students from across the world, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been the heart and soul of our community since its founding in 1867. This sprawling 6,370-acre campus has had a global impact as a center of innovation and research, while the mix of immaculate, historic buildings, modern facilities and peaceful, green spaces create an extraordinary atmosphere to not only live and learn, but to visit.

A Center for the Arts

Located on the west side of the campus and steps away from the South Quad, the Krannert Art Museum is the premier arts and culture destination for both students and visitors. This 48,000-square-foot museum features more than 11,000 objects with specialties in 20th-century art, Asian art and pre-Columbian art, plus numerous special exhibitions throughout the year. Across campus, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts hosts more than 300 live performances from nationally touring acts as well as works from the university’s dance, theatre and music programs. At the south end of the Main Quad, Foellinger Auditorium is one of the most iconic buildings on campus since its dedication in 1907. Though primarily used as a lecture hall today, the building is home to a fascinating auditory wonder known as the “echo spot,” where anyone who stands and speaks can hear an echo of their own voice that can’t be heard by anyone else. Visitors may also discover numerous works of art throughout the campus, including the Eternal Flame sculpture, a favorite spot for couples, and Altgeld Hall, where chime masters regularly serenade passers-by with flowing renditions of “Hail to the Orange.”

Enjoy the Scenery

The University of Illinois Arboretum is more than just a botanical garden — it’s a living, photosynthesizing laboratory providing more than 160 acres of natural beauty. The 10 gardens of the Arboretum offer a scenic backdrop unmatched by any green space in Central Illinois, from the meadow and prairie plants of The Ponds to the insightful and inspiring works on display in the Master Gardener’s Idea Garden. The Arboretum is also home to Japan House, which features educational programs and amenities teaching traditional Japanese art and culture. Stunning, picturesque cherry blossoms line the Sen Cherry Tree Allée while the Tea Garden and Dry Garden offer an atmosphere of quiet solitude.
