Back-to-College Eats: Champaign-Urbana’s Must-Try Food & Drink for Students

August 14, 2025

Welcome, new and returning students and scholars! What better way to kick off the semester at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign than by diving into our brilliant local food scene? From beloved classics to creative new spots, our community offers flavors for every craving. Below, a guide to some of the restaurants that help make CU one of the Midwest’s best food towns, according to Midwest Living.

CAMPUSTOWN

First, start your day right at Cracked. Their breakfast burritos and sandwiches, stuffed with eggs, cheese, and bold ingredients like smoke chorizo and garlic basil pesto, enjoy a reputation for curing everything from early-morning hunger to late-night study fatigue.

You really can’t talk Campustown cuisine without mentioning Sakanaya. Known for fresh sushi and beautifully prepared Japanese dishes, it’s perfect for a quick lunch or a cozy dinner. Come for some lunchtime sashimi, then return for their rich ramen or hearty pork bowls.

Another highlight is BakeLab Pâtisserie & Café, just a short walk from Green Street. When you need a morning pick-me-up, their Ube & Strawberry Croissant and Pain au Chocolate are pretty hard to beat.

For a more traditional pub atmosphere, Murphy’s is a true Illini institution. Located in the heart of Campustown, it’s a game-day favorite for students and alumni alike. Expect an abundance of orange and blue, juicy burgers, and their famous Irish nachos.

Downtown Champaign’s food scene is a culinary playground. At Sticky Rice, a mom-daughter duo crafts Laotian and Thai dishes rooted in tradition and love. Ingredients from their own farm infuse their dishes with authenticity, and their Khao Poon is the true chicken soup for the soul.

If you’re in the mood for a smashburger, check out Smith Burger Company. Build your own or try one of their specialties like the Wiscanson (yep, that’s how it’s spelled) Smasher, loaded with grilled onions, beer cheese, and spicy mustard on toasted brioche.

For a funky, eclectic hangout, The Space brings it. With experimental pairings and local ingredients, they feature dishes with names like Satan’s Hoagie (vegan!), Lazer’s Meatloaf, and Pasta à la Whim. But be quick, because their menu changes like the Illinois weather. Oh, and they have Malort on tap. IYKYK.

When you’re hankering for weekend brunch, Neil St. Blues delivers Southern comfort with a twist. Their all-you-can-eat buffet includes fried fish, biscuits & gravy, mac & cheese, bottomless mimosas (on Saturdays) and soulful music.

DOWNtown urbana

If you’re looking for a laid-back spot with great drinks and an open concept, The Yard on Broadway is Urbana’s newest social hub. It features four local restaurants, an ice cream shop, a café, and full bar, along with an arcade and yard games.

A true Urbana classic, The Courier Café is beloved for their hearty all-day breakfasts and comfort food. Whether it’s a stack of buttermilk pancakes or a huge hand-dipped milkshake, you’ll leave satisfied.

For BBQ lovers, Black Dog Smoke & Ale House is non-negotiable. The Urbana location’s rotating daily specials — think Quesabirria Tacos, BBQ Reubens, and Wagyu Brisket & Burnt Ends — pair perfectly with a pint from local breweries like Triptych.

Rick’s Bakery is a traditional Mexican bakery—and a carb lover’s paradise. Along with to-go coffee and sandwiches, their completely habit-forming bread, pastries, cakes, and cookies will keep you coming back.

alumni faves

When alumni return, certain spots are always on their must-visit list. Esquire Lounge in downtown Champaign is one of them — a warm, welcoming spot with a diverse menu, great beer selection, and the kind of neighborhood vibe that makes you feel instantly at home.

Another icon is Papa Del’s Pizza Factory, famous for its hearty deep dish for over 50 years! The thick, buttery crust and rich tomato sauce make it a true comfort meal, but their thin-crust pies are just as beloved.

For authentic Mexican, Maize Mexican Grill in the historic train station is unbeatable. Their fresh tortillas (always made in-house), flavorful salsas, and famous al pastor will have you obsessed. (You can also find ’em at the Illini Union.)

Finally, no list would be complete without Jarling’s Custard Cup. Their silky-smooth frozen custard has been a local favorite for generations, whether it’s served in a classic cone, a Snowstorm, or their signature “cold fudge” sundae.
