A Welcoming Weekend in the Champaign-Urbana Area: Inclusive Spots Worth Traveling For

September 15, 2025

Champaign-Urbana is a welcoming university community where Pride marches down the street in broad daylight, where a book-bar serves up queer poetry readings, and where museums and performance spaces prioritize equity in the arts. Oh, and did we mention the nightlife? Here’s how to make the most of your time.

FOOD & DRINK

Good Judys Espresso & Bagel Bar

A queer-owned café that grew from farmers’ markets into a sunny storefront in Urbana. Think hand-made bagels to live for, locally roasted coffee, and just the warmest, community-first vibe.

The Literary

Is it a café? A bookstore? A restaurant? A bar? Try all four. This downtown Champaign hangout keeps queer joy on the program—browse the LGBTQ+ shelves, peruse the delightful gifts, and of course, enjoy elevated brunch and a cocktail.

The Space

The perfect mashup of a foodie’s paradise and performance venue, downtown Champaign’s The Space is a fun, welcoming spot to indulge in their always-changing menu, featuring local farm collaborations (so good, and so fresh!).

Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery

Known for their on-farm restaurant, Caprae, and award-winning goat cheese (considered some of the world’s best), this farm creates dining experiences as thoughtful as they are flavorful. (Don’t miss their Babies & Brunch events in the spring, featuring over 100 bouncing baby goats!)

ARTS & CULTURE

Allerton Park & Retreat Center

Mix art and queer history with hiking (and an overnight stay) at this lovely estate in Monticello, where more than 14 miles of wooded trails lead past formal gardens, outdoor sculptures, and the banks of the Sangamon River.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

For a night of seriously impressive talent in a stunning space, head to Krannert Center on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. It’s home to jazz, classical, ballet, world music, opera, and more.

Krannert Art Museum

One of the largest fine arts museums in Illinois, Krannert Art Museum weaves equity, accessibility, and justice throughout its collection, from ancient artifacts to bold, contemporary works to community workshops and events. It’s also free!

Champaign County African American Heritage Trail

Trace 170+ years of local Black history—from farmsteads and churches to entrepreneurship and civil-rights milestones. One of the area’s most meaningful self-guided tours, it also features stunning murals that serve as living history lessons.

SHOPPING

Fire Doll Studio

Step into Fire Doll Studio in downtown Champaign and find a world of vibrant, hand-poured candles crafted with care. You can also create your own custom-scented candle, making it the ultimate stop for anyone who loves a hands-on, sensory experience.

Art Coop

One of the few independently- and queer-owned art stores in the country, Art Coop is a glorious haven for shiny new art supplies, queer vibes, cheeky books and irreverent socks (yes, socks) in downtown Urbana.

Furniture Lounge

If you’re a fan of the mid-century modern aesthetic, Furniture Lounge in downtown Champaign is a must! Their impeccable, wonderfully bright vintage pieces bring timeless style back to life.

NIGHTLIFE

Rose Bowl Tavern

Once known as a honkytonk dive bar, this downtown Urbana institution has become a reliable home for inclusive, folk-and-roots-leaning nightlife.

Anthem Champaign

Looking for joy and unapologetic expression? Check out Anthem in downtown Champaign—the drag shows and karaoke will light up your night.

Gallery Art Bar

Part performance space, part art gallery, this downtown Urbana gathering spot features local art, light installations, a delectable selection of cocktails, and a creative, energetic vibe.

The Canopy Club

An 18-and-over music venue in Urbana near campus, the Canopy Club regularly hosts drag and queer performances, from burlesque shows to electrifying dance parties.

FESTIVALS

CU Pride Fest

What started as a grassroots parade has flourished into a weeklong community celebration. Held in the fall (this year, it’s October 16–26), it features a full slate of events—art shows, drag brunches, live music, family programming, vendor fairs, and largest Pride parade in Illinois outside of Chicago!

Boneyard Arts Festival

Each April, this festival turns the entire county into a pop-up art gallery! Over one weekend, you’ll spot paintings in cafés, murals in alleys, installations in libraries, and artists chatting with visitors in unexpected places.

PYGMALION Festival

Every September, one of Illinois’ most eclectic culture festivals takes place in venues all around Urbana. From music and comedy to literature and tech, PYGMALION features inclusive performances for everyone.

GOOD TO KNOW

All-gender restrooms. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign requires that all new buildings and major renovations include all-gender restrooms and publishes a campus-wide map—useful if you’re spending time near or on campus.

Local context. C-U has deep roots in LGBTQ+ protections—the cities adopted strong human-rights ordinances as early as the 1970s—and today’s organizations keep building on that legacy. In fact, Champaign consistently scores perfectly (100/100) on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index (MEI), a tool that measures the inclusiveness of municipal LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and services.

When to come for Pride. Although we do celebrate Pride Month in June, C-U’s Pride Festival—a weeklong celebration—happens in October. That way, our university students are in town to participate!

BEFORE YOU GO
