The William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College is hosting a free telescope viewing of the lunar eclipse (weather permitting). Staerkel Planetarium staff and members of the Champaign–Urbana Astronomical Society will set up telescopes outside the planetarium so visitors can look at the moon. The circle drive outside the planetarium and Harold and Jean Miner Theatre will be blocked off to allow for pedestrian traffic. Visitors are welcome to attend from 9:30 p.m. until midnight. Parking is available in the M1 parking lot.
The eclipse will be visible through the Americas, Europe, and Africa if it isn't cloudy. In Champaign, the moon will start to get a little dimmer at around 8:30 p.m. and begin moving into Earth's umbra, or full shadow, just after 9:30 p.m. The moon will be over 90% covered just after 11 p.m., but won’t reach totality. The moon will stay partially eclipsed until nearly 1 a.m.
