Live & Local: Your Guide to Music Every Night in C-U

From nightly gigs to weekend festivals, here’s a peek at some of our favorite spots to tune in, hang out, and fall in love with the local music scene.
Canopy Club
Tucked off a campus street in Urbana, the Canopy Club is where music fans of all kinds come to let loose. From hip-hop to EDM, indie rock to jam brands, it’s the kind of place where you might discover your next favorite artist—or catch a big name in an intimate setting.
Gallery Art Bar
Part performance space, part art gallery, this downtown Urbana gathering spot features local art enhanced by light installations, a phenomenal selection of zero-proof cocktails, and a vibe that can’t be beat, no matter who’s on stage.
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
For a night of seriously impressive talent in a stunning space, head to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Located on the University of Illinois campus, it’s home to jazz, classical ballet, world music, opera–you name it. And the best part? Many performances by students and faculty are totally free. So yes, you really can enjoy world-class music without breaking the bank.
Loose Cobra
Head just south to Tolono and find Loose Cobra—a divey, down-to-earth music haven owned by a hometown rock hero. Rough around the edges in all the right ways, it hosts national acts and celebrates local icons. Walk in for one drink, end up staying for three encores.
Pour Bros. Craft Taproom
Good beer, good vibes. Pour Bros. In Downtown Champaign features an impressive self-pour tap wall with a steady stream of live music. Their outdoor stage regularly hosts live acts–think acoustic sets, local bands, and crowd-pleasing covers.
Rose Bowl Tavern
Come where there beer is cold, the community is warm, and the music is always live. A cornerstone of downtown Urbana’s music scene, the Rose Bowl Tavern keeps the tunes flowing seven days a week. Once a honkytonk dive, it’s now a welcoming space for all genres—folk, funk, soul, Americana, goth, and beyond.
The Space
The perfect mashup of a foodie’s paradise and performance venue, downtown Champaign’s The Space is where you can chow down on grilled octopus, dare to drink on-tap Malört, and see nationally touring punk bands, beloved local favorites, and rising open mic-stars.
