Places to Check Out on Campus When Students Are Away
Let’s be clear: We love our students and the energy they bring to our community. But when classes are in session, navigating Campustown can feel like an extreme sport. Parking disappears, lines are long, and the spot you keep “meaning to try” is always packed.
Holiday break is your golden window. Suddenly that mid-day sushi/coffee/shopping detour feels totally doable, and it’s your victorious moment to claim campus as your own!
Here are a few of our favorite places to enjoy:
Sakanaya
Known for ultra-fresh sushi and beautifully plated Japanese dishes, Sakanaya works for every mood: a quick solo sashimi lunch, a cozy ramen date, or a “treat yourself” sushi spread. Pop in midday for a roll or two, then come back another time for chicken katsu or a hearty udon bowl that warms you up from the inside out.
With fewer students around, you can actually snag a seat, take your time with the menu, and try something new.
Manolo’s Pizza & Empanadas
Manolo’s is consistently named some of the “best pizza in Champaign-Urbana,” and one bite will explain why. Expect creative, craveable slices that go way beyond the usual suspects. We’re talking specialties like Apple Butter Bacon, Italian Potato, and the beloved Spotted Goat (perfect for goat cheese, garlic, and gorgonzola lovers).
And then there are the empanadas. Golden, flaky, and stuffed with all kinds of good things like curried sweet potato, ham & cheese, even desserts like chocolate brownie, they’re the definition of “just one more.” Mix and match a box, grab a couple slices, and suddenly you’ve built yourself a campus-style feast!
Ice Arena
Need to burn some energy after all the holiday indulgence? Public skating hours at Campus Recreation’s Ice Arena return on December 27. Get a head start on your fitness resolutions!
No skates? No worries—rentals are ready and waiting. Whether you glide like Michelle Kwan or cling to the wall, it’s classic winter fun. Afterwards, go to BrewLab (see below) for a warm and delicious treat. You’ve earned it!
Illini Union Rec Room
When the kids are driving you up an absolute wall, wrangle ’em up and head to the Illini Union Rec Room. Tucked inside the Illini Union, it’s home to 14 bowling lanes, billiards, and arcade-style fun.
Opening January 2 (check their website for hours), the Rec Room is perfect for families, as well as friend groups, or that “let’s do something besides dinner” kind of date.
BrewLab Coffee
Settle in to this super-cozy café for artisanal espresso and beautifully crafted pour overs, a thoughtful lineup of teas, and perfectly baked, flaky pastries (omg the croissants!).
The vibe’s just right if you crave a comfy corner, juicy conversation with a friend, or easing into some quiet laptop time. With campus life on pause, it’s the perfect time to wrap your hands around a hot ube latte and relax.
Fern & Flora
Fern & Flora is part flower shop, part plant boutique, and part “I want everything in here.” Many of the fresh bouquets feature flowers grown at the nearby Iron Meadows Flower Farm so your arrangement feels extra special.
Beyond the blooms, you’ll find easy-care houseplants for the plant-curious; botanical candles, skincare, and little luxuries; puzzles, plushies, and books that make excellent gifts—even if they’re “to me, from me.”
Make Campus Your Winter Playground
When the students are away, campus doesn’t shut down—it just shifts into a slower gear. Go ahead: park a little closer, stay a little longer, and enjoy having campus (almost) all to yourself.
