Coalescence Theatre Project begins the first tour production of our series of LGBTQIA+ plays
in Urbana at the Station Theatre with the new musical Diary of a Gay Disaster by Rachael Mailer,
directed by Zoe Irving. In this delightful production Ellis wakes up in a turbulent fever dream
created by the Gods of Sapphic Desire. Mia and Finlay, two self-proclaimed expert angel dykes,
say she’s expected to use this time in the dream world to “reflect” on her life.
They use a mystical diary to explore their past gay experiences and help them
confront their "gay disasters". The show is a humorous and heartfelt exploration of queer life,
covering topics like lesbian dating, growing up queer, and non-binary identity.
This charming and campy contemporary musical offers a wealth of authentic
representation for queer women in musical theatre, who are often underrepresented
or portrayed in negative ways. One magic diary and eleven comical tunes later,
these three hot queers learn something important: being a disaster is not a unique talent,
it’s just embarrassing. Oh well… at least there are sexy togas!
