Braver Angels Debate: Should Illinois Use Independent Committees for Redistricting?

Supporters of independent redistricting committees argue that removing partisan politicians from the process promotes fair representation. Opponents argue that democracy is best served by keeping redistricting with elected lawmakers who are directly accountable to voters.
Can district lines ever be truly impartial? Can we truly avoid gerrymandering? Or is political tension over district lines an unavoidable part of representative government?
We’ll debate this Braver Angels-style, meaning there are no experts, no winners or losers, and no “gotcha” or insults allowed. The rules encourage listening and hearing diverse viewpoints. Attendees are encouraged to participate.
Registration prior to the event is encouraged, since space may be limited.
