With wit, exuberance, and an irresistible sense of play, the Mark Morris Dance Group brings together four works that showcase the humor, invention, and musical imagination of Mark Morris. Designed to delight audiences of all ages, this lively program combines brilliant dancing, vivid musicality, and theatrical surprise.
In My Party, Morris transforms the familiar awkwardness and excitement of a youthful gathering into a tender and funny celebration of dancing together. The wonderfully offbeat Tamil Film Songs in Stereo Pas de Deux is pure cosmic invention propelled by the rhythms of South Indian popular music. Peccadillos, set to Erik Satie's miniature piano pieces originally written for children, finds humor and humanity in a whimsical solo filled with gesture, character, and imagination. And in Sport, Morris takes inspiration from Satie's playful Sports et divertissements, turning golf, swimming, tennis, and other athletic pursuits into a witty choreographic playground.
Together, these four works offer an ideal evening of the Mark Morris Dance Group: sophisticated without being solemn, playful without ever losing artistry, and animated throughout by Morris' extraordinary ability to make music visible through dance. It is a program for longtime dance lovers, first-time audiences, children, parents, grandparents—and anyone who enjoys the pleasure of watching remarkable dancers have some serious fun.
