Join Herd Manager Sarah Gardner and the Prairie Fruits Farm dairy team for a hands-on livestock workshop. This series offers close-up opportunities for learning about the work that goes on behind the scenes at our farm.
Parasite management is one of the biggest challenges for any pasture-based goat dairy. The first step for control is learning how to properly identify parasite species and egg count load in order to direct treatment and to prevent parasite treatment resistance.
The afternoon:
-
An introduction to herd health and parasite management in the classroom
-
A short tour of the farm
-
A walk through the pastures to discuss rotational grazing (weather dependent).
-
Hands-on fecal egg counts. You’ll prepare and read your own sample under the microscope, start to finish.
-
Open time for Q&A when you are welcome to bring challenges or questions that you may be facing on your own farm.
This workshop is a good fit for goat and sheep owners, homesteaders, ag students, and anyone curious about what it takes to care for a ruminant herd.
Registration $50 per person. Ages 14+. Limited to 10 participants.
