Tuesday Trails with Terri: Frozen 5K Preview
It's not often that you find a race in Central Illinois in January. The weather can be warm or we can have a blizzard, which I suppose is part of the fun. A few years ago, the Champaign Park District decided to have some fun and create a 5K that celebrates our crazy winter, the Frozen 5K. This morning, I met with Chelsea from the park district to learn more about what to expect.
Starting at 9:00 a.m. at Hessel Park, this race will cover three different parks and run down the Boulware Trail. In addition to Hessel Park, one of my favorite places to bring my dogs to talk, you'll head down the Boulware Trail to Mattis Park. (you can check out our picks from that run here.) After Mattis Park, you'll hit Moore Park before heading back. Here's the full course:
During the event in 2019, we had quite a bit of snow, making for an incredibly fun race. This year, there's a possibility for rain or ice, so be prepared! A little endorsement...head out to Champaign Outdoors and pick up some Yaktrax for your shoes. These are my best friends during icy weather!
While you can register on site, you're encourage to register in advance! There's still some race swag available for those that sign up right away!
Will you brave enough to run this 5K? Share your pics with us on Instagram by tagging #outsideofordinary!
Now, where shall I run next? Comment on our Facebook page!
