C-U Outside! Five Unique Champaign-Urbana Area Trails

CU is full of incredible options for walking and running among stunning naturescapes. We’re highlighting five unique trails that showcase the diverse outdoor experiences our area offers, whether you're looking for stargazing spots, art-filled walks, or interactive family fun!
Dark Sky Trail
Middle Fork River Forest Preserve, Penfield
The Middle Fork River Forest Preserve—part of Champaign County Forest Preserves and home to Illinois' only International Dark Sky Park—just got even better (if that’s possible). The newly developed and fully accessible Dark Sky Trail system loops through tallgrass prairie and includes the best stargazing spots in the region. The preserve’s new observatory—with a retractable roof—officially opened in April, offering unforgettable night sky experiences, free of light pollution. Whether you're a casual walker or an amateur astronomer, this trail is a must.
Museum Meander Trail
Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, Mahomet
Nature meets narrative! The Museum Meander Trail is a short, accessible walk located next to the Museum of the Grand Prairie. Along the way, families can enjoy the Storywalk, a partnership with Mahomet Public Library. It’s a self-guided reading experience that brings picture books to life with page-by-page displays. Perfect for engaging the kids while getting them out in the fresh air!
Meadowbrook Park / Wandell Sculpture Garden Trail, Urbana
Art lovers and nature enthusiasts unite! The trail that winds through Meadowbrook Park not only features restored prairies and native plantings—it’s also home to the Wandell Sculpture Garden, a rotating outdoor art exhibit. With more than a dozen large-scale sculptures set amidst natural backdrops, every visit offers something new. It’s ideal for a reflective stroll or an inspiring jog, blending culture and calm in one beautiful loop.
Greenbelt Bikeway Trail, Champaign
If you’re looking for in-town trail, check out the Greenbelt Bikeway Trail, a paved, multi-use path that winds through not one, not two, but three Champaign parks—Dodds, Heritage, and Kaufman—offering a smooth route for walkers, runners, and cyclists alike. You can escape into nature without ever leaving the city.
Camp CaMfield / Lake Shelbyville Trails, Sullivan
Up for a scenic day trip? Head to Camp Camfield near Lake Shelbyville, where three picturesque trails wind through lush forest bluffs, lakeside views, and rolling hills. Sure, it's a bit of a drive, but the area’s natural beauty makes the trip well worth it, especially for hikers looking to immerse themselves in a more rugged, rural setting.
