In the early 2000s in Urbana-Champaign, Lynn Sprout filed a sexual orientation discrimination complaint against one of the largest and most powerful employers in the city. Her case became national news, sending shock waves through the local community in a case that set a historic precedent in the fight for civil rights and Family Medical Leave for same-sex couples. This case, and Lynn's life, are documented in the recently published book, The S & S Bar and Grill.
Join us for a panel discussion on the case featuring co-authors Lynn Sprout and Kelly J. Applegate-Nichols, activist, organizer, and co-founder Kim Kranich of the 85% Coalition, and Traci Nally, Lynn’s civil rights attorney. Archives staff will provide a brief introduction to local LGBTQ+ history, and materials from the Archives will be on display.Following the panel, there will be a book signing for The S & S Bar and Grill.
