Film-Fanatic Club continues its big-screen repertory cinema series, Film Fanatic Movie Nights,
with a screening of The Unknown (1927). Directed by Tod Browning (Freaks) and starring Lon Chaney
(The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Phantom of the Opera), this silent-era masterpiece
of obsession and dread remains startling nearly 100 years after its release.
The Unknown is often regarded as Browning and Chaney’s most satisfying collaboration.
Crafted at the height of Browning’s fascination with outsiders and psychological extremity,
the film exemplifies a pre-sanitized Hollywood willing to venture into genuinely disturbing terrain.
Long revered by cinephiles and midnight audiences alike, it has become a cornerstone
of silent-era cult cinema — praised for its intensity, taboo-challenging imagery,
and fearless emotional extremity.
The screening will be introduced by Chuck Koplinski,
a film critic and contributing writer to the Library of Congress.
