The history of Rantoul's growth and events that helped shape it can be viewed in part at the Rantoul Historical Society, founded in 1973.  Rantoul began in the early 1800s with the Plains Indians camping and fishing at the scattered groves at the west end of town.  At the Historical Society, you'll learn everything from the first permanent settler, Archa Campbell, to the lawyer who drafted the charter, Robert Rantoul, who secured the first land grant railroad in the country.  Discover significant events, like the founding of the Illinois Central Rail Road, the "Great Fire" and the arrivale of Chanute Field.  Tours by appointment.  FREE.  Hours:  Tues, Fri, Sat:  10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.;  Sun 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
